A copper lightning arrester (often called a copper lightning arrester air terminal) is a conductive device made of copper used in lightning protection systems to intercept lightning strikes and safely conduct the current to earth.

Purpose

• Attracts lightning at the highest point of a structure
• Provides a low-resistance path for lightning current
• Protects buildings, equipment, and occupants from lightning damage

Typical construction

• Material: High-conductivity copper (electrolytic grade)
• Rod diameter: Commonly 12 mm, 16 mm, or 20 mm
• Rod length: 300 mm to 1200 mm (or more for towers)
